If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I am a committed Anglophile; it is in my blood as evidenced by the recent invitation to celebrate our heritage.
My cousins and I will be getting together; our British ancestry traced back through Woodbury, England, to Southwark, London, 1620; sailing to Connecticut in the early 1700’s.
For my fellow colonists, I provide some useful British translations:
torch = flashlight
biscuit = cookie
pram = baby stroller
dummy = baby pacifier
aubergine = eggplant
tube = subway
bonnet = hood of a car
boot = trunk of a car
spanner = wrench
flat = apartment
barrister = lawyer
football = soccer
tip = garbage dump
wc (water closet) = bathroom
pants = trousers
jam = jelly
jelly = jello
shag = (I’ll give you a hint: it doesn’t refer to carpets)

I’m sure you can come up with a more extensive list.
May you also find time to celebrate with your families this summer.
