advent: hope

I have never been one to get out Christmas stuff before the 15th, but here I am surrounded by people displaying mega decorations inside and out.

So, I have capitulated, well, somewhat. I have pulled out my advent wreath, complete with electric candles. I even just ordered an advent calendar.

I don’t know about all of you, but it has been a somewhat difficult year for me, not to mention the last month… So I am grateful for the distraction of researching the history of advent which I share with you, along with inspiration from various writers.

Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the coming of Christ and the return of Christ. Although not known when the period of Advent began, it was in existence from about 480 AD.

The advent wreath, in its roundness, represents a crown of victory. Decorated with fir, a symbol of strength; laurel representing victory over sin and suffering; holly which does not lose its leaves represents the eternity of God; the greenness is a sign of life and hope. The flames of the candles signify light bringing hope and peace against the struggle of darkness.

The first candle, Hope, represents the prophesy found throughout the Old Testament of a Savior to come. “Come Lord Jesus Come” is not a cry of desperation, but an assured shout of cosmic hope. More about hope coming up.
