adventures in diy

My ladder out, having replaced a multitude of dead light bulbs, my rehabbing confidence semi-restored, I venture on to the rattling air vent high up in my bedroom wall, which becomes a problem when the revitalizing cool air gushes out like a storm trooper on the warpath, waking me up at multiple undesirable hours.

I have a light bulb moment! I’ll try a knitting needle to keep the inside metal propped up, thus eliminating the reverberations caused by the metal hitting the grill (bear with me, I’m trying to describe for people who do not live in old places that need updating)

I have an “uh-oh” moment when the metal knitting needle disappears through the grill, into the ductwork. More unforeseen “uh-oh” moments to come include:

finding the screws to remove the outer grill which is coated with at least 23 coats of old paint, reaching for said needle, managing to push it further in, losing it to the internal duct work, now experiencing even more metal rattling sounds. Maybe a magnet would work – it didn’t.

I file for future reference: just buy a new vent which works properly, which can save money and embarrassment in the long run, when you have to resort to calling the professionals.
